Dessert Forks
The Multiples Project involved creating multiple versions of a chosen kitchen utensil. I chose a dessert fork because I wanted to experiment with an object that is ubiquitous in everyday life. My intention was to design forks with an unusual yet symmetrical form that challenges the traditional design norms of a fork. Throughout this process, I learned that there are different ways to approach the design process, especially when considering the scale of production. I also developed a better understanding of the importance of precision and consistency in both designing and creating a product.

01 Form Prototype Exploration
Material SelectionInitially chose aluminum for its lightweight properties and ease of handling.
Design DevelopmentCreated initial design concepts and specifications for the product.
PrototypingProduced initial prototypes by hand to test the design and functionality. Evaluated the quality, size, and appearance of the prototypes.
02 Design Progress
Redesign and RefinementSketched multiple variations of the fork design until finalizing the most suitable one.
Made necessary adjustments to the design based on improvements from feedback.
Material ReselectionSwitched to stainless steel for its durability and similarity to common market products, ensuring it was ideal for the desired functionality and aesthetic.
03 Production Procedure
Laser CuttingContacted a Rhode Island-based company to utilize fiber laser cutting technology.
Achieved high precision and efficiency in cutting, ensuring clean edges and accurate shapes.
Fork ShapingUsed a wire-bending machine in the industrial design metal shop to curve the forks into the desired shape.
Filed and sanded off any burs from the forks to ensure smooth edges and a polished finish.
04 Final Ideation
FinalizationMade sure that all forks were similar and finalized, ensuring consistency across all units for the multiples project.
Documented the design process through photographs and form explorations to communicate the development and refinement of the final form.
